The Pro – chancellor of the Catholic University Institute of Buea, CUIB, Rev.Fr George Jingwa Nkeze has said their training is geared towards bringing a new twist to entrepreneurial development in Cameroon.

Talking to journalists at the close of CUIB’s 5thBoard of Trustee Meeting, Fr. Nkeze mentioned that they are out to make a difference in their teaching and vision of higher and professional education in Cameroon. “CUIB is an entrepreneurial university. With the

Economic of Communion Philosophy, EoC, we are entrenching that concept. The EoC philosophy is new in Cameroon and across the African continent.  We have defined the entrepreneurial concept. We have produced handbooks for our entrepreneurial programmes, our HNDs and all our schools that tell the world who we are. When you get into that book, you will see the difference we are making,” he noted.

According to Fr. Nkeze, CUIB is working

hand-in-glove with another catholic university in the USA, St. Thomas Aquinas University in Minnesota, where the latter is mentoring the former in catholic studies. “The certificates we shall be awarding to our graduates on catholic studies will be done with the blessing of St. Thomas Aquinas University in the USA, while those we shall be offering to our graduates in the other line of studies come next year will be with the blessings of the University of Buea, UB, our mentoring university in Cameroon. This is in respect of the laws governing higher education in Cameroon. We look forward to have exchange visits with our partners from the USA,” he said.

The CUIB Pro – Chancellor dismissed rumours that they are not an accredited university in Cameroon. He will add; “Those are false information. From 2007 to 2010, we have been following the procedures laid down by the law and that is why we are coming back to the name given by the government of Cameroon – Catholic University Institute of Buea, CUIB. Let the parents be assured that their children will graduate from our university. CUIB has come to stay, they should not listen to people peddling wrong information around. The government has approved and recognised the position of CUIB in the Southwest Region. There is nothing to fear. CUIB has a good future.”

Initially called University Institute of the Diocese of Buea, UIDB, Fr. Nkeze explained that the government chose the name Catholic University Institute of Buea, CUIB, when the proposal from the Bishop of Buea, Mgr. Immanuel Bushu, for the university to be named Catholic University of Divine Mercy in 2007 was rejected by the government. “In that transitional period, we went on with the name UIDB but now with the classification of universities across the country, the government has asked us to stay by the name they gave us – Catholic University Institute of Buea, CUIB. So, we stay by the prescription of the state,” he said.

Chancellor and Chairman of CUIB, Mgr. Immanuel Bushu, Bishop of Buea said three years after the official accreditation of CUIB, they are making a lot of progress and standing up to the challenges of offering higher and professional education to Cameroonians. “Things are going on well after the first two years of operations. We are working on new infrastructure and fine-tuning the programmes with specialisation,” he said.

He wished a lot of courage to the students and parents of CUIB, saying it is a lot of sacrifice to pursue and finance higher education. “The value they get from CUIB is to ensure a brighter future for the children,” he added.
