Gobina Foundation Launched in Buea, Cameroon

A scholarship and Foundation fund in honour of late Mrs Juliana Ebenye Ndoko Gobina, a fine educationist, has gone operational in Buea. An idea of the five sons of the deceased, championed by the third, Dr. Marvin Ndoko Gobina, the scholarship and foundation fund took off, Wednesday, January 8 2013 at the campus of Fonge Academy Bilingual Nursery and  Primary School, Muea, Buea.

In its maiden activity, a class one pupil of Fonge Academy, Martha Ifechukwu, through a draw done in the school campus, won a five-year scholarship scheme that will see her through to Class 6 with all expenses paid for. The draw was done in the presence of the pupils, authorities, the Gobina brothers and their father, Simon Mokoko Gobina.

education. “In my adult life, I have met some people, unknown to most of us (the Gobina boys) that our mother helped go through their education in Cameroon and even facilitated their movement out of Cameroon to further their studies, especially in the USA, whom I have met in the course of my stay in the US. Seeing her vision and love for education, we thought that we could push this legacy of hers and keep her memory going,” he mentioned.

academic scholarship; tuition, books, uniforms, feeding and all that is essential for the child to successfully go through her education in Fonge Academy. “We are fostering the child through education. We are here to help the kids grow. We have started and there is no stopping,” Dr. Gobina added.

education,” he noted.

Though the Gobina Foundation is currently backed by the Gobina boys, Dr Gobina indicated it was not limited only to them. “Whoever is willing to help is welcome but the foundation is created by the boys of late Mrs Juliana Gobina. We have decided to let her memory live and her legacy grow.”

He entreated others who are interested to push forward the educational life of the underprivileged not to let the dream die. “Somebody helped us. Everybody who goes through education receives help. Everybody dreams to get educated. So, that dream should not be left to die,” he advised.

Earlier, the proprietor of Fonge Academy, Dr. Mike Fonge told the kids to be God-fearing, respectful, hard working and patriotic.

Dr. Fonge, varsity don and educationist enjoined his pupils to copy the example of the following heroes and heroines he listed; Martin Luther King, Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandela, Dr. Bernard Nsokika Fonlon, Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare, Barrack Hussein Obama, Prof. Dorothy Limunga Njeuma, Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Teresa and Maya Angelo. He invited the kids to dream and be the best of Cameroon.

Late Mrs Juliana Gobina was born February 27 1953 in Muea, Buea and died January 3 1987. After her primary education in Muea, she proceeded to Saker Baptist College, Limbe, where she studied and got her GCE Ordinary Level Certificate and subsequently to CCAST Bambili for high school, where she passed the GCE Advanced Level. She moved on to the National Teacher Training College, ENS in Bambili and will graduate as a “Professeur de Lycée”. Mrs Gobina was pioneer teacher at Government Bilingual High School, GBHS, Limbe with retired diplomat, Samuel Becke, as principal, where she taught Chemistry and Biology. At the time of her death in 1987, she was a Chemistry teacher at Bilingual Grammar School, Molyko, Buea. She was married to Simon Mokoko Gobina and they were blessed with five boys, all alive today; Peter Henry Lyonga, Carl Gobina, Marvin Gobina, Ronald Gobina and Lauren Gobina.
