Commonwealth Day in Cameroon – University of Buea Takes Part in Celebration

Buea, Cameroon — Being a member state of the Common Wealth, Cameroon just like the other 51 member states celebrates the common wealth day which comes up on the 2nd Monday in March every year.

2.4 billion People across the world celebrate the Commonwealth day this year under the theme “CONNECTING CULTURES” and Cameroon is no exception. This year’s celebration is significant as it coincides with the diamond Jubilee of her majesty Queen Elizabeth, the queen of England who is the president of honor.

In Buea, the South West Region of Cameroon, the Commonwealth day was celebrated at the University of Buea campus under the Patronage of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Vincent Titanji.

The occasion started with the chanting of the Cameroon Anthem. The Queen’s message to the 52 member states of Commonwealth was read. In the message, she cited the opportunities offered by Commonwealth and the reason why member states should share and strengthen the citizenship they enjoy.

The message from the Secretary General of Commonwealth, Kamali Sharma was also read. In the message he emphasized that commonwealth is an opportunity to celebrate rich cultural diversities.

Educative talks on commonwealth were given by some lecturers of the University of Buea. For example, Professor Emerentus Tala laid emphasis on the point that the English culture is more of a blessing than a curse.

The occasion was graced by cultural manifestations and debates on cultural diversity, the benefits to promote equality in the commonwealth members.
