By Walter Wilson Nana

Government High School, GHS, Bokwaongo, Buea, has come to stay after twenty-five years of existence.

At a colourful and action-packed ceremony to commemorate twenty-five years of this secondary education institution, recently, Secretary General in the Ministry of Secondary Education, Prof. Ivo Leke Tambo listed some of the school’s feats. These included; government’s action to establish the institution as the second post primary establishment to meet the needs of the rapidly growing town of Buea, the work done by the pioneer teachers, the School Management Board and the PTA to ensure that the school took off on the right foot, the hard work exhibited by the students, staff and parents during these years to put the institution on the map of Cameroon Secondary Education as one of the outstanding establishments.

According to Leke Tambo, the next twenty-five years of GHS Buea will be that which the ex-students would have become the leaders of Cameroon in the private and public sectors, the young women graduating from GHS Buea would have become great women in the society, standing tall alongside the men, in building a great Cameroon, that GHS Buea ex-students would have played a vital role in Cameroon’s emergence and that GHS Buea should continue to be at the pole position of Cameroon’s academic circle and morality.

Earlier, the Principal of GHS Buea, Hannah Etonde Mbua brought to the fore the thousands of young people who have sown positive efforts and have reaped great successes thanks to the dynamism and assiduity of the staff of the school.

She rejoiced with their ex-students, who are in almost all walks of life thanks to some of the clubs in the school, which have served as a nursery for many of them. Some of the clubs she mentioned include; Journalism, ICT and Health.

Etonde Mbua said the responsibility to maintain GHS Buea as a Cradle of Excellence lies in the hands of the stakeholders who are the parents, school authorities, current students and ex-students.

While recognising the efforts of the teaching and administrative staff, the PTA and School Management Board for the academic and infrastructural successes recorded so far by GHS Buea, Etonde Mbua had some pressing difficulties to highlight. “The students and staff of this school need befitting playgrounds, especially a good football pitch. A new coat of paint is awaited for some sections of the school and there are dire need for teachers in the History, Physics, English, Food Science and French Departments,” she mentioned.

The GHS Buea Principal invited all to look at the next twenty-five years in a spirit of what they can do for the school and not what others did not do.

An ex-student of GHS Buea, Fidelis Pegue Manga of WWF Cameroon said after a difficult start, the students, teachers and parents of GHS Buea have shown abnegation and unflinching determination to surmount a litany of hurdles onto the path of excellence. “Today, here we stand at the foot of the verdant Signal Hill, proud of what we have accomplished and confident of our ability to meet the challenges ahead,” he added.

Pegue Manga invited all the ex-students of GHS Buea to show a deep sense of solidarity for the continuous growth of their Alma Mater.

Created and opened in 1987, GHS Buea took off with an initial enrollment of 211 students.
