Cameroon Celebrates International Customs Day

Cameroon joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Customs Day under the theme “Communication: sharing information for better cooperation.”  The event, which took place at the Yaoundé military airbase in Mvan, was presided by The Minister of Finance, Alamine Ousmane Mey.  He was accompanied by the Director General of Customs, Mme Libong Likeng Minnette.  Equally present was the Inspector General at the Ministry of Finance, Ndile Albert, Commander of the Military Headquarters in Yaounde, Colonel Melingui Nouma Donacien and heads of diplomatic missions.

The event started with the Minister of Finance calling on customs administrators to reinforce their communication strategies by sharing information with control services at the boarders, partners of both the public and private sectors.  He encouraged them to be transparent, rapid in rendering services to the public and respect the people they serve.

international movement of goods, the economy of the country depends on them. The Minister urged customs staff to employ maximum efforts in the collection of state revenue and facilitation of international trade as a means to attain President Paul Biya’s 2035 plan of an emerging Cameroon.

a computerize system which will facilitate the clearing of goods at the ports in 24 hours compared to 10 days now  or 19 days in the past.

She reiterated that Nexus assistance centers have been created in Douala, Ngaoundere, and Kouseri to update business people in the use and application of custom procedures, provide general information concerning customs administration, entertain complaints and seek possible solutions to difficulties encountered during business transactions.

The entire customs family paid homage to some of their colleagues going on retirement; while some of them received certificates of merit from the International Customs Organization. Other officers received certificates of excellence as recognition on their dedication to serve the nation.

Over 55 custom graduates of the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM) received epaulets. Amongst them were captains, lieutenants and warrant officers.

The event ended with a match past from the graduates.
