World Cup 2014: Cameroonian Referee Selected For Another World Cup Final Phase

Evariste Mekouande will be at his second World Cup competition as an Assistant Referee from Cameroon come June 12 to July 13 2014 in Brazil. He was at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, still the only referee selected from Cameroon by FIFA, the world football governing body.

The 40-year-old Cameroonian will be amongst 9 referees selected from the African continent. He is one of the six Assistant referees, while there are three Referees from Africa.

In the list made public by FIFA recently, there will be 25 trios of referees for the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Pele’s country, Brazil. Interestingly, no referee from France has been invited for the Brazil football jamboree. This is happening for the first time since the 1974 World Cup.

Evariste Mekouande, who hails from the East Region of Cameroon is a Police Officer by profession and has been making it big across Cameroon and the African continent as a distinguished Assisitant Referee.

In the sidelines of his activities as an Assistant Referee in Cameroon, Mekouande has been making exploits across the African continent, which propelled him to FIFA attention. He has also handled with dexterity football matches at the African Champions League and the African Cup of Nations.

In 2007, he was part of the trio that referred the Junior African Cuo of Nations in Congo – Brazza. 2008, he participated in the Cadet World Cup in South Korea and before that he was at the African Cup of Nations in Accra, Ghana of that same year, where he was amonsgt the trio of the opening match.

In 2010 and 2012 respectively, Mekouande will work-hard-his way to feature once more in the finals of the 2010 and 2012 AFCON.

Now a Referee of FIFA ranking, Mekouande is in the good books of the international body and will once more bring to the fore his knowhow at the Brazil rendez-vous. He is the only Cameroonian now certain to be in Rio de Janeiro for the beautiful game christened – Football.
